THE DESIGNERS VIEW ON INTERACTIVE COMMUNICATION

Informational/Instructional design

The process of creating legible and efficient information to help guide the user through a process in order to successfully complete a task or action.
This can aid the preparation of ones self, in order to complete a task or explore new ways of doing tasks with efficient and appropriate steps. These steps can be through visual, verbal or textual instructions, depending on the users preference.
The following are examples of different steps of completing a task;

How to make a paper plane

The video footage displays a complex paper plane being done in simple and easy to follow steps, otherwise hard to decipher without the knowledge of an expert who has superior experience in that particular model. The use of the medium in this case of instructions helps the user follow on with an imaginative experience, being able to stop, and reply over and over until the steps are completed to perfection. This is ideal for visual learners.

Where is

The following map portrays a two different destinations, through a visual and textual interface. The options of following either a text based direction or relying purely on the visual map, is up to ones preference. Although it is more appropriate to gain the best of both worlds using either when there is confusion, in one aspect of the visual display or vise-versa.

Installing a new window

It is important to know before any construction or repair is taken place, the appropriate tools and necessary material needed to complete the task effectively. In this example there is a list of tools and materials given to the user before any steps are instructed to carry out, the importance of this list decides whether the construction is going to be viable.

The instructions below convey a step by step, somewhat of story board plan. By having image, direction and text it allows less room for error in the crucial area of construction. This provides a creation of simplicity in a complex situation, making the steps as effiecent and reliable as possible in order to minimize error.
